Gymnastics championships draw few high school boys
 | June 25, 2015

My personal favorite from the summer! I covered the YMCA National Gymnastics Championships, which brought more than 5,000 people to Wichita. My editor asked me to write a “colorful piece” covering the event, but I took it a step further. After reading through the welcome packet, I noticed that of the 1,200 athletes, only 25 were boys and only two in high school. I set out to determine how -- and why -- this sport became so female-dominant.

Kansas couple not giving up hope of adopting Congolese boy, even after years of trying | June 22, 2015

A heartbreaking story about a local couple trying to adopt internationally but roadblocked by the Congolese government for political reasons.

Community works to boost attendance at McAdams pool | July 26,2015

A community feature about residents of a predominantly African-American neighborhood banding together to keep their city pool open.

Ruling on gay marriage may mean millions more for Kansas economy | July 19, 2015

A business story I wrote that had a lot more numbers than I’m used to. I was going to write a short brief about the report but decided to talk to business owners and incorporate their perspective into the story as well so readers wouldn't get as bogged down by the numbers as I did.
